So, call me crazy but I’m intrigued by cloth diapers and want to give them a try. Diapers are expensive and it seems like you can really save some money by doing a little bit of extra work, especially if the diapers last through multiple kiddos. There’s environmental aspects too, but I’m really more concerned with the frugal part ;-) We did a rough estimate for the cost of cloth diapers vs disposable for one baby from birth to potty training (lets say 2.5 years old) and even with water usage to wash them (Andy figured out it’s about 7-10 cents per load) we’d save around $1,000. The savings increases as you add more kids because there’s only start up costs of buying the diapers one time.
A friend let me borrow some of her diapers and I bought 3 different kinds to try. I’ve used them for one day so far and my initial opinion is I actually don’t mind them. They’ve contained his explosive poo’s and haven’t leaked. Time will tell if the laundry or poo gets to me, but I plan to try them for a month and then make up my mind if that’s the direction we’d like to go. Although I think we’d stick to disposables for overnight trips (read Thanksgiving and Christmas). Andy’s actually on board with the experiment so we’ll see what happens!
Brands I’m trying out are FuzziBunz, bumGenius and Flip diapers. All are adjustable “one size” diapers that claim to work on babies 7-35lbs. The Flip ones are definitely still too big on Ben who’s around 9lbs now though.
These bloggers are far more experienced in the cloth diaper realm than I am. Their experiences encourage me:
