Meet the new mac

Two years ago Andy built me a desktop Hackintosh for work – PC guts running the Mac OS (all thanks to Apple’s switch to the Intel processor). You can read more about the OSx86 Project here. Lately my laptop has been ridiculously slow, even with simple tasks like word processing and surfing. It’s nearly impossible to do any photo editing or tasks that suck more brainpower.

So I asked Andy what my options were for a Hackintosh laptop. We have the Mac OS and I’m most comfortable on Apples, but I just can’t bring myself to fork over that much money again. My PowerBook G4 cost me over $2,000 when I started college in 2004. Surprisingly it still has a little resale value so I’m going to sell it on ebay and it will pretty much cover the cost of the new Mac…

Meet the Dell Inspiron 1520! I spent hours researching models that would meet requirements necessary to get the Mac OS working. It also had to not be ugly (surprisingly difficult) and under $350. I liked a lot of HP designs, but apparently they’d be pretty difficult to work with and the wireless may or may not work. Samsungs that would work with the project were nice, but pricey. Most Dells were just plain ugly, so I’m surprised I found this one. It looks like such a happy, friendly computer and almost has a few macish qualities. (I am SUCH a girl)

We bought it on ebay last night and surprisingly the seller is just a few towns over. So we’re going to pick it up sometime this week and Andy will get to work on the transformation. I ♥ nerdy husbands!
