Magical

by Heather | 0 comments

We’re enjoying every last bit of summer so the kids and I visited the Cumming Nature Center in Naples. It’s 25 minutes south of us but feels like another world entirely (the lack of cell service being proof). I think the best way to describe it is simply, magical.

We enjoyed some of the inside exhibits and play areas first.

The kids loved these bins, full of different hands on learning pieces. Their particular favorite was the rubberized scat samples that varied from animal to animal. I’m so proud.

Next we headed to the outside play area. I was really impressed with all the different open play structures…teepees, bridges, logs and stumps to climb on. So fun! Cassidy wiped out a couple of times (the logs were still pretty wet) but managed to get right back up and keep going.

Afterwards we headed out on a trail to explore.

Ben spotted a chipmunk! Where’s Waldo?
P8239092sm

He was enamored with this little one :)
P8239091sm

We also almost walked face first into this guy!
P8239095sm

It was like the blind leading the blind! Kidding :) Ben took the initiative to lead and did end up taking us the wrong way, but with a little help he realized what he’d done and we headed the correct direction to the beaver pond.
P8239085sm

Cassidy found some acorns along the way.
P8239113sm

And then decided she was done. She grumpily proclaimed “I’m tired. My legs are broken. I don’t want to walk anymore.” I was able to get her going again with a bit of cajoling and a lovely rendition of The Ants Go Marching. I’m sure the entire woods appreciated our singing.
P8239130sm

We made it to the pond!
P8239139sm

No beavers to be found, but Ben spotted a little dam off in the distance.
P8239137sm

The kids refused to get in a picture with me, but hey, I’m in a picture! Bonus points for always behind the camera mom.
P8239150sm

We met a little friend along the way, Ivy from Texas! Hope you and your mom are enjoying your time up here! Ben called this one the portal.
P8239153sm

We adventured for around 4 hours, had a picnic lunch and played some more. I feel like we barely scratched the surface of all the center has to offer though, there are so many more trails and things to see. I’d especially love to come back during different seasons to see how the landscape changes! Magic indeed!

Mother’s Day

by Heather | 0 comments

Today we met my mom, Paul, Kate, Brielle and Elloree at Kelkenberg Farm in Clarence. I was doing updates on their website and saw they hosted a Mother’s Day event. I told Andy *that’s* what I wanted to do for Mother’s Day :)
P5138425sm

We met Charlene the owner for the first time too (we had never met her in person before).
P5138310sm

Our first activity was the wagon hay ride.
P5138309sm

We rode around the farm, through the woods and even past a cemetery. It was here Cassidy exclaimed “That’s where zombies live!”
P5138328sm

Handsome fellas!
P5138345sm

Next, the kids picked their favorite colors and got to make jump ropes.
P5138355sm

Ben took his job very seriously.
P5138357sm

Then there were the ducky races!
P5138366sm

The gentlemen (minus Justin who had to work).
P5138416sm

Brielle and Nonna watched the kids make their jump ropes.
P5138359sm

Elloree snuggled with Kate for a bit.
P5138297sm

Cutest matching ladies!
P5138302sm

We headed into the barn to meet some of the animals. Kelkenberg farm makes their own honey and these were some of their bees. I’m so fascinated by the intricacies of bees, but it’s definitely too time consuming a hobby for me right now.
P5138376sm

Bunnies!
P5138444sm

Cute little baby.
P5138369sm

Fuzzy poof.
P5138374sm

Baby whose mama is a dairy cow on the farm.
P5138381sm

These two farm dogs were the sweetest. The white one had flopped over to get belly rubs from kids and the black one trotted over to say hello too.
P5138364sm

Surprise, Ben found a cat…
P5138371sm

Love my little beasties :)
P5138391sm

We saw some turkeys in the next barn.
P5138395sm

The tom enjoyed strutting about.
P5138397sm

Elloree kept saying “Turkey!” It was really cute.
P5138400sm

There was a huge sandbox the kids could play in too.
P5138406sm

And then they each got a pony ride.
P5138409sm

Ben was a little unsure (his equine interactions can be counted on one hand).
P5138418sm

Thanks for the photo, Paul!

We had a delicious picnic lunch including “Kelkenburgers” made from their own angus beef.
P5138427sm

Kids exploring the cracked corn after lunch.
P5138452sm

And then lawn games before we headed home.
P5138436sm

Fun with Poppy.
P5138437sm

I’m so glad Paul got this photo too, I didn’t get any others with myself and the kids. It was such a fun morning spent with my people, I’m so happy it worked out!

Happy Mother’s Day. Humbled I get to be called “mama” by Ben and Cassidy. Thankful I could share the day with my mom! Missing my step mom Leslie and mother in law Judy this year. Overall it was such a lovely day :)

We thought it was supposed to be spring!

by Heather | 0 comments

The first day of spring break was 45 degrees and sunny, and was looking like it was going to be the ONLY nice day of the week. We grabbed some snacks, gloves and the kids’ Easter bubbles and headed to a local hiking path.

We had a fun walk out, and then on the way back Cassidy was done. She collapsed on a bench and exclaimed that her legs were broken!
P4028302sm

P4028306sm

After a bit of marching, songs and dance we got up and moving again. We checked out this little creek before heading back to the car. The kids were tossing sticks and rocks in and Ben actually fell in! He was fine ;-) There were a bit of tears and then some giggles and we headed back to change his clothes (always have extra in the car).
P4028309sm

We got to see these beauties before heading home. I’m surprised they stuck around with all our noise and crashing through the woods. Stealthy we are not :)

Baby chicks

by Heather | 1 Comment

Cassidy’s friend from school got baby chicks last week! They invited us over to meet them, 15 in all. The group included Welsumer (will lay dark brown eggs), Brown Leghorn (white eggs) and Olive Eggers (olive green eggs). Miranda and her mom showed Cassidy how to hold the chicks and that they like to snuggle up to feel warm and safe. The girls and “the girls” were just the cutest!

Miranda’s brother Garrett was playing mother hen. Ben had a full day of school so he didn’t get to meet them until we popped over a week later.

So sweet!
P3098061sm

I have lofty plans for chicks next year (after all, why else would you buy a house in the country?) I really want to get the garden up this year and deal with some other projects before jumping into chickens though. Looking forward to learning more about them!

Wildlife Defenders

by Heather | 0 comments

Cassidy and I went on a really neat field trip with her preschool class. Wildlife Defenders is a program of Bridges for Brain Injury. They provide services and support for individuals with traumatic brain injuries. Before we left school that morning, the kids met at circle time to discuss where we were going, what we’d see and how some of the people working there might act or sound a little different…but we all have the same hearts. It was a really sweet, teachable moment!

Cassidy with her friend Miranda, working on a project before we left.

The first critter we met was this guy! He has enough toxin in him to kill a 120lb animal if it tried to eat him.
P2287958sm

A day program participant telling us about some of their other animals. A lot of the animals they help care for can’t be rehabilitated back into the wild, so they enjoy a life of “stardom” doing shows and events.
P2287960sm

We met an opossum too! I learned that in the wild, they’re most likely missing their ears due to frostbite! They’re also resistant to rabies because their body temperature is lower than most mammals.
P2287964sm

He’s kinda cute! And they eat a ton of ticks too!
P2287965sm

Cassidy really liked this guy!
P2287975sm

Next up, Cassidy wasn’t such a fan of!
P2287966sm

Smile!
P2287969sm

Did you know King Julian likes graham crackers? :)
P2287981sm

After meeting all the animals inside, we went outside to see a few more. The coyote was beautiful, but they still give me the creeps. We hear them howling and yipping in the fields around our house at night.
P2288011sm

A lynx!
P2288004sm

A dingo!
P2288007sm

And a fox, oh my!
