Back to school

Ben started school again this week, he was pretty excited. He was eligible for Kindergarten in NYS since he turns 5 before December 1 (October 15 birthday), but we decided to wait another year. We went back and forth, talked with his teacher and really just decided he could use an extra year to gain some confidence and some emotional maturity (as mature as a 4/5yo can be…). He’s super social and very smart, just very emotional and is pretty hard on himself sometimes. So another year to try new things without heavy pressure and to build his confidence is what we’re looking for! So call it another year of preschool, PreK or TK (Transitional Kindergarten)…whatever you’d like, Ben’s enjoying it so far. He even has a little buddy in his class he’s known for forever.

In the past few weeks he’s even started an interest in reading and sounding words out and asking what they are. I picked up a reading program (Teach your child to read in 100 easy lessons) which comes highly recommended and will start that with him soon. Sometimes he’s into school work and we do little activities; counting, graphing, word games and such. Other times DEAR GOD it’s like pulling teeth. But we do manage to find the right balance :)

He also desperately needs a haircut!

He was most excited about his new school shoes. I accidentally bought him shoes with ties *bangs head on desk* and now he wants to learn how to tie his shoes. And Cassidy wants to climb up in her carseat and buckle herself every single morning. It takes us forever to get out of the house…but I love them anyway.

Just keep swimming

Ben took beginner swimming lessons over the summer through the rec center. They were held at Victor’s new pool (wow!) and his teachers did a fantastic job with the little ones in his class. They used a tot dock that let the kids play in a sectioned off part of the pool with shallow water. A lifeguard watched the kids the whole time while two teachers went back and forth with different kids, having them jump in, learn how to kick, try getting their heads and faces wet, etc.

We did it for 2 weeks and I loved seeing the difference it made in his confidence and enjoyment of the water. He went from being super clingy with his teacher and scared to kick his feet…to jumping into their arms, getting his entire head wet and even jumping from the diving board to a teacher who caught him below. Although I don’t think he knew exactly what he was getting himself into with the diving board, because afterwards when I was praising him for being brave he told me he was never doing that again, haha.

Cassidy did a really good job of hanging out during Ben’s lessons. As long as I had elmo coloring books and some snacks!

I’m so proud of Ben for trying something new. We’ll definitely sign him up for lessons again when they’re offered!

Cassidy is 2

Cassidy’s 2 Year Stats
Sizes
Height – 2′ 9″ (61st percentile)
Weight – 26lbs (63rd percentile)
Wears some 2T and some 3T clothes, girl clothes are smaller and tend to fit tighter than boy clothes.

Sleep
She still takes an afternoon nap, usually 1-3pm. Bedtime is 7pm-6/7am…I’ve tried later bed times but she still seems to wake up early so at least with the early bed we get a little bit of an evening since Ben goes to bed at 8pm. Every once in a blue moon she’ll sleep in until 8am and I wish I could tell you the magic formula to get that to happen! She does wake up at night still. We’ll hear a “bang” (her foot or something on the side of her crib) or a random cry in the middle of the night, but she does settle back down to sleep by herself. Sometimes she doesn’t fall back asleep and it escalates and I have to go tuck her back in and rub her back and then she’s out again.

Eating
She does great with using real silverware (we ditched the kiddie plastic ones) and has really been wanting to use normal cups instead of sippy cups but that’s still a little messy. I’d say she’s an average eater, but has to be encouraged to eat a lot of her meal instead of just pick at things. Some of her favorite foods include cheese, grapes, pizza, picking peas from the shell, french fries, blueberries and apple sauce. Not so favorites include lettuce, chicken (unless it’s a nugget) and peaches (who doesn’t like peaches???)

Potty
This would only be worth mentioning on a blog if you’re a parent ;-) Ben was at VBS this week so we worked on potty training since nothing else was on the calendar. She’s doing great, I’m very proud of her! She hasn’t had a pee accident in days and really seems to get the process. We’re still working on poop, she still does that in her undies :-P I just can’t seem to catch her before she does it to bring her to the potty. But we talk about it every time she has an accident, plop it in the toilet and say “poop goes in the potty” while we clean up. All a learning process! After all she’s pooped in her pants her whole life and now I’m changing things up on her, haha.

Milestones/Other Things
She has a very full vocabulary and definitely the opinion to express what she wants. She’s funny though, she waits quietly to assess things (you can see the wheels turning) and then when she does speak it’s very calculated and direct. A lot of words are still a little garbly but I can decipher what she’s saying pretty well.

She’s a very brave little girl, climbing up slides, jumping off things and trying her tricycle. Not reckless by any means, but very brave for a little one!

Still adores everything that is Ben and will try and do things to get his attention and make him laugh. She calls him “Ba” which is super cute.

She’s started calling herself Cassie, it’s pretty adorable.

She wants to “try self” … do EVERYTHING her by her self. She actually manages fairly well and I think is doing a lot more independent things at 2 than Ben was. It’s funny how the 2nd seems to grow up quicker! She gets very mad if you try and help her so we just have to plan an extra few minutes in (for everything, lol)

And now, way too many cute pictures of the little miss <3 IMG_9299sm

Cassidy’s 2nd Birthday

by Heather | 0 comments

We celebrated Cassidy’s 2nd birthday with friends and family a few weeks ago. The theme was rubber duckies since she LOVES them. Aunt Becky made a ducky cake and cupcakes too. It was such a nice afternoon making Cassidy feel special. Happy birthday baby girl :)
