Library Dance Party

by Heather | 0 comments

Over winter break we met my mom at the Brockport library for a preschooler dance party. I’d never been to that library before but Brockport is about halfway for each of us. I was really impressed with their children’s librarian and department. Ben had a ton of fun dancing and playing while Cassidy was just content to watch and look at books.

Icicles

by Heather | 0 comments

Wow it’s been forever. I had a few posts ready but they mysteriously disappeared when I updated WordPress :( I’ll have to get back to them at some point. In the mean time, check out this giant icicle we had on the back of the house. Andy periodically knocks them down but this one was pretty impressive.

Thankfully we haven’t had any roof leaking issues, even with all the snow and ice backed up. We have a membrane rubber roof because the pitch is so low that regular shingles are just perfect for ice damming. The membrane roof is one giant sheet of rubber that doesn’t let any water up underneath.

Ice Fishing!

I surprised Andy for his birthday this year by booking an ice fishing trip on Sodus Bay. He’d been talking about wanting to try it so I found a guide who could take us out for a half day and teach us the ins and outs. I wasn’t exactly sure what to expect, but it was SO much fun. We treated friends of ours who are going out of the country soon, so their company on the trip was great too.

The day started with a beautiful sunrise but eventually got grey and snowy. It was freezing out on the ice but inside the tent it was actually warm with the heater. My toes were a little tingly by the end, but nothing too bad (I would definitely recommend insulated boots and wool socks!) We each caught some fish, although a lot had to be tossed back because they were too small to keep. The girls seriously outfished the boys though!

All the fish we kept. Not exactly any trophy winners, but it was still pretty fun!

The best tasting fish sticks ever!

Our guide, Mike with Upstate Guide Service. He was great with us newbies and taught us quite a bit, I’d definitely recommend him.

Such a fun adventure!

It’s been a while since I’ve done one of these “life update” posts, so here it goes. We’re 4-5 months into the school year and the schlepping back and forth and back and forth every day is getting pretty old (at least we live right down the road). It’s really the traffic and suiting two kids up in winter gear to drop Ben off for 2.5 hours then turn around and do it again. Last year was all play dates, the park and library and random outings, but now it’s all school and school friends and not as much “do whatever we want” type mornings. I kind of miss the freedom, but am super happy to see all Ben is learning and how excited he is for school. And we do shoot to the library and park when it was warmer, after school and between lunch. I need to start doing one on one things with Cassidy again, we’ve mostly just gone to the Y during Ben’s school time.

I keep looking at houses and properties online, such a bad habit. We’ll be in this house for a while and it certainly has it’s advantages (and I love what we’ve done with it) but can’t help but think/dream of the future. I have to find a happy medium of being content here for now and still thinking about that acreage we hope to have some day. It’s funny, I tend to like the house more when it’s clean…hmm…

Speaking of the house, people have asked what our next project will be. Honestly, there’s a lot of little things to finish up (namely trim and random things). There are a few floor tiles in the kitchen where the grout has cracked, we need to fix those. I pleaded with Andy to change the grout color in the upstairs bathroom (I don’t know WHY I chose the color I did 7 years ago) and he finally did it for me :) Well, I had to dremel out the old grout and he regrouted with a much nicer color. I would love love love to get a deck on the back of the house this summer, but that’ll be around $2,000+ which we’d have to save up for :(

I was browsing free eBook downloads on amazon and found St. Ives by Robert Louis Stevenson. It’s about a French officer’s imprisonment by the British during the Napoleonic war. Snooze fest? Haha, actually it’s a love story too and is proving to be a pretty good read. I made the mistake of watching the 1998 movie version on Netflix though…it was, interesting. Kind of in the Monty Python fashion (which I enjoy, but this movie was just odd). Hopefully the classic book is better :)

It isn’t even February yet and I’m itching for spring, sigh. I have to start planning the veggie garden soon and planting seeds in a month or two. I love that winter means no outside chores but I can’t wait for warmer weather.

I’m still running for exercise too! (Running away?) It’s actually really fun to run outside in the winter, I never would have thought. The Y girls and I are doing Pittsburgh again in May too. I’m on the relay team (not doing another half yet) but I feel like half marathons and further distances might be a bit like childbirth. During it and for a few months after you swear you’d never go through it again and then lo and behold, you sign up for another 13.1 miles. Actually I just found out there’s a Star Wars Half Marathon weekend out at Disney in California, that would be awesome to do some day!

Cassidy is a year and a half old! She’s such a bright eyed, bushy tailed, full of personality little girl. Loves books, duckies, her puppy stuffed animal and her daddy. She runs to the stairs and squeals “Daddy, daddy, hi daddy!” when Andy gets home from work, it’s the cutest thing. She said her first sentence to him too, “Bye bye daddy.”

She still does her fair share of screaming to get her point across but has said a bunch of other things: Eat, Ow, Please (although it sounds like Me), Fish, Dance, All Done, Book, Yay and Bye Bye Potty (although it comes out Bye Bye Tee).

We have started potty training, I didn’t really want to (haha, call me lazy). She kept bringing me diapers and would whine at me to change her though. So we’ve been trying undies for part of the day and she’s been doing pretty good. Some accidents but a lot of successful potties too. She claps for herself and says “Yay!” when she goes, it’s pretty cute.

Her and Ben like/annoy/like/annoy/like each other. They can get along so well, play nicely and share toys. And then I can head downstairs to switch laundry and I hear screaming and crying. Love the sweet moments though and trying to praise them for those and foster that brother/sister love relationship ;-)
