With the news (and facebook, twitter, chats at the Y, etc) focusing on Osama Bin Laden the past few days…I’d been struggling to put into words how I felt about it. On the one hand, he was a monster who took innocent lives. He was also another human being though, and to delight in the death of another person isn’t right either. A friend from highschool (Michael N) said it this way and I completely agree:
When a person proves beyond a shadow of a doubt that they are incapable of coexisting with the rest of humanity, they must be removed from humanity. It is a necessary act, but to take joy in it is to give in to vengeance. Vengeance is a base urge fueled by the worst parts of human nature, disguised as the noblest justice. With that said, well done to all those in military service. I’m sorry you had to do it.
