Saturday at the cottage

by Heather | 1 Comment

Today we went to my mom and Paul’s cottage for the afternoon. While Ben napped, Andy and I headed out on our bikes to do a geocache. Unfortunately I ended up with a flat tire when we arrived at the Shoe Tree. What’s a Shoe Tree you ask? Basically, this:

I wish my phone had a better camera, but I guess it works for catching in the moment things. I had to call Paul to come rescue me, while Andy continued on towards the next cache.

While at the cottage, we also met my mom and Paul’s new puppy, Aubrey. She was SO sweet and very good with meeting new people.

Justin and Kate joined us for dinner too. It was just a quick afternoon visit, but we had such a fun day :) Life at the lake is always relaxing!

We went to the zoo

Last week Ben and I went to the zoo with my friend Sandy and her son David. I’d never been there before, it’s a smaller zoo, but was still pretty fun. Ben really enjoyed the monkeys and kept saying “whee” when they’d swing around. The African exhibit (about 1/3 of the zoo) was still under construction so there wasn’t a ton to see but it was still a fun afternoon. We’ll have to go back at the end of the summer when everything is finished!

We just finished all 10 seasons of friends. Now we need a new series to watch.

I don’t know if I’ll ever be ok with skinny jeans. I just remember being in 5th grade dying to get out of them because the cool thing was now flares. Not to mention, I just feel like I can’t pull them off. Body shape wise and coolness factor wise. I prefer bootcut.

I weeded and mulched a bunch of flower beds this weekend, but have a lot more to go. We can get free mulch from our town’s dump and Andy keeps bringing garbage cans of it back each week. We save about $150 each year because of the free mulch…we have a lot of flower beds. But I’m ok with that, I always liked them better than just bushes.

I think I want to grow my hair out again. Short is cute, but somedays you really just want to do a pony tail without 50 bobby pins.

The latest game with Ben is singing “The itsy bitsy spider…is SO big!” He does the little spider motion and then opens up his arms really wide for “Soooo big!”

I’m considering a smart phone again. I keep going back and forth about it, the data plan just kills me. I might wait for a few to drop in price before jumping. Or you might find me again in 6 months still going back and forth and back and forth :)

We haven’t worked on the house in months, I’m starting to get the itch again. Memorial Day weekend Andy is taking a bunch of days off work and his parents are coming down and we’ll attack the next project. I think it’s going to be finishing 1,001 little things we’ve left along the way. (Trim, caulking, making a built in bookshelf, staining doors, adding thresh holds, putting a mirror and shelving up in the bathroom). The bigger project will probably be gutting Colby’s room. Haha, Colby is our cat and right now he gets closed in the 4th bedroom downstairs for breakfast and dinner because Jack tries to eat his food. I suppose if we gut and finish the room, we’ll need a new solution for Colby though.

We’re getting rid of the Stratus this summer, I.cannot.wait. Poor rusty car is falling apart and Andy has to keep fixing things. It’s 13 years old, I paid very little for it and it’s had a good life. We’re looking at the Ford Escape but are open to other smallish SUVs.

The lawnmowers in our garage keep multiplying. Andy brings them home from the dump, either to scrounge for parts, scrap the aluminum or fix up and sell on craigslist. He came home with over $400 from the scrap yard last month (mind you he’d been hoarding metal in the garage for half the year). I keep telling him if we lived in the country and had the room we’d be that family. You know, the ones with all the crap in their yard. Broken down cars, tractors, swingsets, scrap metal, etc :)

I think we might try canoeing with Ben this summer. The thought kind of terrifies me because the boy will not stay in one place for a long time. And I’d hate to be stuck out in the middle of a lake and have him decide he was done with it all. Guess you never know ’til you try.

Speaking of Ben, he also doesn’t hold your hand and walk nicely with you. If I set him down at church or on the sidewalk to try and walk holding his hand, he’s just gone in another direction. Meaning I have to carry him every where we go, he’s getting heavy!

I’ve been making something called a Green Monster Smoothie lately, it’s so yummy:

Ingredients:
Handful of baby spinach (yes weird, but you don’t even taste it)
1 banana, peeled
3/4 cup frozen fruit (pineapple, mango or peach)
1/2 cup orange juice

Directions:
Add all of the ingredients into a blender. Blend until everything is well combined. Serve immediately and enjoy!

Boston

Andy had a conference to attend in Boston this week and I tagged along. My mom and Paul watched Ben Tuesday through Friday and we’re SO grateful for them! It wasn’t a “real” vacation, Andy was in seminars 9-4 and I worked from the hotel…but it was definitely a fun get away, just the two of us! We had the evenings to explore Boston and had a few adventures.

The first night we were there, we of course got seafood for dinner. Andy ordered a huge bucket of crab. I ordered fish and chips with fried shrimp.

We took the subway and walked a lot!

We visited a few parks and different neighborhoods.

A Boston local in one of Andy’s seminars told us we had to go to a place called Mike’s Pastry. We found it on one of our adventures and bought some of the biggest, tastiest cannolis I’ve ever had. So glad we listened!

Finally, we visited the beach. I’m not exactly sure which one, but it was tucked in a little harbor area and you could watch planes coming in. This is us, attempting to take a nice picture at sunset (which we kind of missed). We also got caught in the rain after the beach, which is slightly less romantic when you have to walk miles back to your hotel :)

Even though we were gone just a few days, it was so much fun to get away. I love hanging out with my best friend!

Super Mighty

Mighty Taco (a mexican fast food restaurant from Buffalo) finally came out our way! This week they had the grand opening of a new store a few towns over. I heard from friends that both the drive thru and in store were packed all week, so we waited until today to check it out. I waited 15 or 20 minutes at the drive thru, not too bad considering how busy it still was. Mighty Taco is soooo yummy, but honestly it’s not like the best mexican food I’ve ever eaten. I love Chipotle and really miss a place called Don Pablos that isn’t around anymore. I think Mighty Taco just reminds me of home and of being a teenager (simpler times). And they do have loganberry, which is another Buffalo favorite (raspberry/blackberry flavored drink). All in all, I’m so excited it’s out here :) We ordered our usual today and had happy tummies.

Andy – 2 Super Mighty’s, wheat tortilla, medium sauce

Heather – Combo #1 (1 Super Mighty with mild sauce and sour cream, nachos, cheese and medium loganberry no ice)

My dad is in the Air Force and sometimes he brings home MREs (Meals Ready to Eat).

I got a kick out of some of the packaging.

We headed outside to make one of the meals. Andy added water, which starts a chemical reaction that cooks the food.

We stepped back and let it cook for about 10 minutes.

While we waited, Andy made the orange drink mix. It actually wasn’t bad, tasted kind of like gatorade.

The burger and macaroni and cheese finished cooking. Yum…

The macaroni and cheese wasn’t bad but Andy said the burger tasted like catfood. I think it looks like something the cat leaves in the litterbox…
