Birthday weekend

by Heather | 0 comments

Andy’s parents spent the day with us Saturday. We had pizza, cake and enjoyed each others company. There were also more birthday presents!

Part of Andy’s dad’s present was a box full of old video game goodies (he collects them).

Ben was fascinated with the Nintendo cartridge. Ancient technology :)

Andy received a Backyard Ballistics book from his brother.

It’s baby’s first angle grinder! Haha, really just another gift for Andy.

We gave Andy’s mom a gift card for Joann Fabrics.

Hooray for birthdays!

They’re so much fun!

Andy turned 29 today! I made creamy chicken and wild rice soup and bread bowls for dinner. Then there were presents.

An RC infared helicopter.

And a fun little robot, which Colby was very interested in.

We’re getting together with Andy’s parent’s this weekend for cake and more birthday celebration. Their birthdays are the same week as Andy’s. Happy birthday hun, I love you!

Icicles

We have regular icicle lights for outside of the house but have wanted LED ones for a while. They just cost so much less to run and there isn’t the fight to find which bulb in the string is the broken one every year. The only problem with most of the LED ones we saw was the seizure inducing glow they make…it just doesn’t look natural and we really weren’t fans.

After Christmas Andy picked up a few boxes of LED icicle lights at 1/2 price. They were solar powered, but the only ones we could find that had the natural looking light we liked. Handy Andy daisy chained the strings together so they can plug into a regular outlet now. He also ran extra wire through each strand to minimize resistance (or at least that’s what he told me, I don’t really know what that means). We went from 230 watt lights to 15 watts, not too bad.

This post isn’t really about Andy’s tinkering though. It’s about Jack. We knew he wanted to chew them but when we told him “no” he plopped down right next to them. His little kitty eyes said “I’m not being bad, I’m not doing a thing.” Reminded me of another little monster we have in the house ;-)

Musings

Well it happened, my sweet, can do nothing wrong little baby is turning into a toddler. With opinions and demands. We haven’t had a total meltdown yet, but there’s definitely been a few fits when he can’t have something he wants. Such a sweetheart though, 2 minutes later he’s over it and waddling around doing something else…but it has begun ;-)

It fascinates me that you can work hard and sculpt your body. It’s something you can control in a world where a lot of things are out of your hands. I’m still a lumpy, squishy Heather…but I’m seeing progress. One of the instructors at the Y said something that was kind of a wake up call. “Own your workout.” It’s so natural to try and avoid pain, you can do a half hearted work out and get moderate results. Or you can embrace the pain, work through it and come out the other side better for it. And hopefully less lumpy :)

The weather has been crazy here! High 40s one day, in the teens the next. Rain, snow, sun alternating. We had a huge windstorm last night and I was waiting for a tree to come through the livingroom. Luckily that didn’t happen, only damage was one of our chimney caps blew off and fell down the roof.

I’m loving all the house progress we’ve made in the past few weeks. I told Andy there may be hope for this house yet :) I brought the antique dresser we got from my mom into my office. I organized my fabric by colors into the drawers and set up my quilting stuff. Not that I, you know, have time to quilt…but it’s nice knowing it’s there all set up for me. Sometimes I walk into the office just to look at things. It’s so weird seeing it as a part of the house, like it’s always been there. I don’t think I can get bored with our little ranch because something new is getting finished all the time.

Speaking of the house, I was looking at architecture websites the other day. I stumbled on the HGTV Dream Home and started drooling. If we ever built a home I’d love something like that. I’m not really into colonials (they’re pretty, just, so normal). Not that ranches are high on the creative list either, but I do love the beams and brick in ours. I love the American Foursquare, Arts & Crafts and Bungalow architecture. Prairie Style homes are also neat. Not that we’re in a position to any time soon, but if we did build a house those would be some styles I’d like to emulate. Ideally we’d have 10+ acres with woods for Andy to hunt on, be 10-20 minutes from civilization and be in the town we live in now. Haha, Andy doesn’t want to give up his dump pass ;-) We can dream, can’t we!

Happenings

A bunch of images that didn’t really fit except in a random post together…

I made cookie mix in a jar as Christmas presents for our neighbors and the girls who do babysitting at the Y. The recipe came from here.

Ben helped Andy fix the vacuum a few weeks ago. Don’t worry, it wasn’t on. Although Ben loves it and waddles around after me when I’m vacuuming.

Andy taught me how to sell things on ebay this weekend. Ben wanted in on the action.

After church today Andy made us grilled cheese and tomato soup. Like anything he does though, he brought a level of excellence to it. He pulled out the extra virgin olive oil, spices and special cheeses. The soup had garlic and shredded cheddar cheese in it. I’m sure if we had homemade bread our sandwiches would have been made with it too. Yummy!

I bought curtains for the kitchen windows. I made the valances last year but have just felt like I was in a fish bowl in the kitchen at nighttime. The curtains look like they were meant to be there and really help with privacy at night. Andy even trusted me to install the tieback rods by myself too. You don’t understand, me and math and making permanent holes in his newly finished walls is just a combination for disaster :)

We had friends that live down the road over for dinner last week. The next day their 4 year old daughter Bella drew this picture for us. She did a great job, I even have bangs! I think it’s funny Andy has hair and I have a dress though. When have you ever seen me wear a dress?

Christmas

This Christmas the three of us spent a really nice morning together.

Ben loved the wrapping paper.

And the boxes!

My mom and Paul came for dinner later in the evening.

They gave us Bacon, it was hysterical.

So much fun :)

We headed to Andy’s parent’s house on Monday. Andy’s dad and Jared enjoyed playing with Ben…and his toys :)

Jared opened his piece of poop, courtesy of Andy.

We also got Jared an inflatable shark that flies through the air.

Ben wanted to play with the big boys! The shark was so cool!

Andy’s parents also had this really cute vintage village, I just had to snap a picture!
