Snail’s pace

by Heather | 1 Comment

It was windy and raining a snowy mix today. We’d just gotten back from Wegmans and my hands were full of groceries. Mr. Pokey Pants was taking forever to get from the car to the house, dragging his stuffed animals behind him. I called for him several times and finally yelled “Benjamin, now!” He looked up with a huge grin on his face and said “Yook (look) mommy a snail!” and pointed to the little shell. My heart melted, he was so excited. I set the groceries inside the door and we held the shell for a bit then put it back in the dirt. Ben said “bye bye snail” as we went back in the house. I’m not normally sappy, but I couldn’t help but thank God for the precious gifts of both pokey toddler and little snail in my flowers.

Easter

Easter morning we headed to church together. We actually started going to a new church, a plant off of the main, big church that’s out here in our area. It was a really nice, small gathering and we’re excited to see it grow (but more on that in another post).

Before church Ben got to dig into his Easter basket. One of his gifts was a playmobile motorcycle.

And stickers.

Lots of stickers.

Later in the afternoon, family came over for dinner. We had a ton of fun with everyone :)

Ben enjoyed mooching off everyone and gulping Aunt Gabby’s chai a little too much.

Wait, there’s MORE Easter baskets?

Grandpa’s Boots

by Heather | 0 comments

Andy’s parents came to visit last weekend. Andy’s dad was supposed to help us put drywall up in the bedroom downstairs but Andy was feeling really under the weather. So instead we just had lunch and visited that afternoon. Always nice to have them over for a non-work weekend (we do love them for their company and not just their slave labor).

Ben found grandpa’s shoes by the landing and thought he’d try them on. He waddled around the house saying “I wear Gampa’s boots!” with a grin.

We’re doing a “Rock, Rhythm and Roll” class at our local rec center. It’s for 2-4 year olds and the kids do everything from somersaults on floor mats to playing follow the leader to circle games with each other. It’s great, Ben has a blast…except my normally polite, assertive, calm 2 1/2 year old turns into “that kid” during the class. You know, the one you don’t want to sit next to because he distracts your kid. The one running to the other end of the room, giggling hysterically at his escape when we should be sitting in a circle playing with the rubber ball. The teacher actually asked if he was 1 1/2 and I took no offense because during the class he has the impulse control of a kid half his age. I don’t know if it’s the excitement, awesome new activities or sweet sweet freedom of running around in a gym…but he is just one different little dude in the class. I have noticed he’s starting to follow directions better and listen to when we switch activities, so we’re making a little progress. And he’s having fun, which is good…but there’s only so much chasing runaway Benjamins this pregnant lady can handle.

We’re liking the name Cassidy for baby girl right now. I don’t think we’ve 100% committed, but we’ve sat on that one a while and it’s really come to be how I think of her. We also need a middle name which is proving to be harder to come up with. Even looking at family ones, nothing has really stuck on us as the “one.”

The next few months are going to be cah-ra-zy. Next week we’re headed home to get our taxes done and go to my soon to be sister in law’s first bridal shower. With me being self employed and Andy having a bunch of contract engineering projects alongside his normal work stuff, we just let an accountant family friend handle it. The following weekend is Kate’s second bridal shower that I’m helping plan. Then Easter which we’re hosting. April is full of weekends with friends and hopefully house work weekends to get one of the bedrooms finished (next step is drywall, yay). May brings two weddings (including my brother’s that both Andy and I are in) and the Pittsburgh Marathon weekend. June brings some relief and then July is BABY!

The first weekend in May I’m headed down to PGH with some of the Y ladies. Originally I was going to run the half marathon or be part of the full marathon relay team but once I found out I was pregnant, I decided against it. I would have if I were only like 4 months along, but I’ll be 7 months in May and that just does not sound like fun. So instead I’m going down as a cheerleader and photographer, which should be great. I also designed the logo and tshirts for our little ladies running team. Will share once those get printed!

Benisms

Somebody got a haircut! He really needed it :)

I still can’t tell what color his eyes are now. Blue? Brown? Grey? Hazel minus the green?

Ben will be 2 1/2 next month. Time seems to go so fast and yet it seems like he’s been around forever too. He’s such a sweet, smart little boy. Very gentle with animals and younger kids. Knows his ABCs and can count up to 20 (although sometimes we get 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 16, 17, 18, 19, 20). He’s starting to recognize letters which is pretty neat (hello Sesame Street Letter of the Day and fridge magnets with mommy). Colors, shapes, animals, sounds are all in his little vocabulary…so cool to watch him soak stuff up.

Potty training is going excellent, we haven’t had an accident in weeks. He uses the big toilet now (with an insert and some assistance) and has gone to the bathroom fine outside the house. He even pooped on the big toilet too (tmi?) We’re still in a diaper at nap/bed time but I don’t even think he’s physically capable of holding it overnight anyway so that’ll come a while down the road.

Some Benisms from the last few months (sorry if you’ve seen some of these already on facebook):

“Daddy outside snow mowing” – Dec 2012
(Andy snowblowing the driveway)

“Hi mommy, welcome home” – Dec 2012
(After I came back from getting the mail)

“Doggie Aubee sit. Good treat” – Jan 2013
(Telling me about his weekend with my mom, Paul and their dog Aubrey. He was giving her treats when she sat)

“Come on mommy, twy it, weeee!” – Jan 2013
(Ben sliding off the couch head first, inviting me to join him)

“Oh thank you mommy, I like strawberry yogurt” – Feb 2103
(Breakfast apparently met with his approval that morning)

Called his pee “yucky juice” – Feb 3013

His new thing is saying “I like Thomas” if he wants to watch Thomas on TV. Or “I like pudding” if he’s hoping for pudding after dinner. Sneaky, sneaky ;-) My response is usually “Yes, I like Thomas too” which throws a little wrench in his plans, haha.

He was fascinated by my earrings one day and grabbed at my ear. I said “Ouch that hurts, please be gentle.” Ben replied “I sorry mommy, come here” and reached over to give me a hug *melts*

He can also be a spaz sometimes and a crazy, stubborn two year old. Selective listening, selective direction following and the attention span of a gnat all seem to come with the territory though. Love him anyway :)
