Random pics

These were sitting on my desktop, I just hadn’t gotten around to sharing them. Enjoy the randomness.

I inherited a Keurig. It was a friend’s and doesn’t exactly put out the right amount of coffee. She contacted the company about it and they just sent her a brand new machine. She gave me her old one and while it’s on Andy’s list to take a look at…it still works pretty well if you fiddle with it a bit. Andy put a new label on it and calls it my Snoot-a-Brew…the snooty coffee maker :)

This is from a few weeks ago, Andy pushing Ben around in the Powerwheels. The modifications he’s working on are almost finished and soon he can drive Ben around by remote control.

My dad and Leslie stopped in on their way back to Massachusetts. Ben is such a ham for company!

Ben helped me dust the livingroom today. He grabbed his socks from his laundry basket and went to town.

We went to the zoo! Post about that coming soon. It’s a polar bear butt!

Easter

This year Easter was at our house! My dad and Leslie came in from Massachusetts and Danielle and Gabby from Pennsylvania to spend the night with us on Saturday. We went to church together Easter morning and then Justin & Kate, Christopher, Andy’s parents and brother came for dinner in the afternoon.

Ben enjoyed flopping on the air mattresses we had out for company.

He also wrestled a little bit with my dad :)

The girls, relaxing after a yummy dinner.

Ben scored several Easter baskets with goodies.

Andy’s parents watched Ben open his little basket.

After food and baskets we headed outside for family photos. We’re such a “special” family. Andy snuck Jack into the photo, poor Colby was left out. Half of us aren’t looking at the camera or are blinking. And Ben wants OUT of the wagon. Perfect :)

Fortunately there were some nice ones.

Thanks for spending the weekend with us, we had so much fun!

Is it worth it?

I remember asking a friend that before we had kids. She assured me that yes it was, but honestly all I saw was how exhausted parents are and how little “me” time they had. Then there were all the brats you see in stores and restaurants (you know what I’m talking about!) Not really convincing for me!

So why did we decide to have kids? Haha, the million dollar question. The summer I was pregnant with Ben I posted about not “needing” to have kids. Now that Mr. Ben is here though, can I just say I do need him. The whole “can’t imagine life without them” phrase is true. I wouldn’t say he completes me as a person, but being a parent has definitely opened up a new plane of existence and life experiences. That was one of the reasons we wanted kids…it’s a life experience we wanted. I also wanted family, the thought of a quiet house with empty rooms just seemed so lonely. Andy and I have a blast together and I love him so, so, so much but the thought of just the two of us forever seemed kind of off. As in, that’s it? There had to be something more, something else…new life, loud, crazy, smiley…the fun and connection of family.

I asked myself when I was 50, 60, 70…would I regret NOT having kids more than having them? For me, the answer was yes, I would regret missing out on the experience more if we’d chosen not to have them. And that’s what it all comes down to really, it’s a choice (although yes I know sometimes there are surprises and other times nothing is happening when you really want it to). For the most part, it’s a choice. Have kids, don’t have kids…you know yourself better than the MIL hinting at grandkids all the time or your buddy telling you that they ruin your life (which they don’t). Thankfully we’re not living in the 1940’s where it’s assumed you’ll get married and make babies. It’s a very personal decision.

I never understood the argument that people who choose not to have kids are being selfish. That just seems ridiculous, I think it’s more selfish to have kids. Did you read the above paragraphs? It’s all “I” this and “I want” that. By default I think you learn to become less selfish as you enter parenthood, after all it’s not about you anymore. I think the least selfish thing to do would be to adopt though, what an awesome gift to give to another little human!

The best way I can describe it is a roller coaster ride, the highs are higher but the lows are also lower. Some days it’s so much fun, everybody’s happy and I feel on top of the world. Some days I want it to be all about me again as I serve a drooly little person. The high-lows can also fluctuate from hour to hour and I can experience a whole range of emotions in just one day. That being said, I definitely believe children are a blessing. 18 months on the “other side” (and still trying to figure this thing out), but I don’t regret it. It’s a wild ride and definitely something I didn’t want to miss :)

ps – I don’t know where this post came from. A lot (and I mean a LOT) of friends are having babies this spring/summer and a few others have started talking about it. I guess I just needed to share :)

pps – Does anyone else think it’s weird the government gives you money for having a kid? I mean, I’m not complaining…but why should they be required to give me money just because I made a little person? Again…thankful, hello tax return…it’s just weird.

All grown up

We helped my brother and his fiance Kate move into their apartment today. Ben was a good little travel buddy, but thankfully Andy’s parents were able to watch him most of the day so we could be useful elsewhere.

They found a great apartment in a quiet part of town, right on the canal. It’s going to be so pretty when trees fill in and boats are sailing by.

Love you guys :) So excited for the new part of your lives!

I think I’m in love

I mentioned my mom and Paul will be getting a puppy in May. The lady who’s raising the pups posts weekly updates on her farm blog. This week she posted a video of squirmy, wormy puppies who can’t even walk yet. They are the cutest!

Video borrowed from the Good Shepherd Farm Blog. You can read more about the English Shepherd breed of dog here. My two dogs growing up were also English Shepherds, they were rescues from the National English Shepherd Rescue. They’re fantastic, smart, need a job to do kind of dogs. I’m so looking forward to meeting the puppy (but not having to potty train her). I’ve got my own little critter to potty train in the next year or so ;-)

Busy, busy, busy

This weekend was b-e-a-utiful, 70s and sunny! It felt great to get so much outside work accomplished in March (instead of May). Andy and I tag teamed watching Ben and then both worked during his naps. Andy pushed Ben around on the power wheels he found at the dump (since Ben obviously isn’t old enough to push the pedal and steer by himself). The boy had a blast and kept saying “truck” the whole time. We also had our first bonfire of the season on Saturday night!

I took down Christmas lights from the lilac bush out front. They were so pretty sparkling in the sunshine! Andy took icicle lights off the house and found a random rusty screwdriver up on the roof.

Ben took a 3 hour nap Sunday afternoon and I was able to get so much weeding and flower bed cleaning done. I took a break at one point and wandered in the garage to find Andy making sparks. I’m still not entirely sure what he was doing…

I also planted more seeds for the garden (just indoors for now). The tomatoes I started a few weeks ago are already popping up.

The fan on my computer also died this weekend. Handy Andy came to the rescue. I don’t know if the tools in this picture actually had anything to do with the replacement of the fan, but this is how his desk looked afterwards. He just happened to have a comparable fan “in stock” and replaced mine with a little fiddling.

Finally, my mom visited Saturday afternoon and we went on a girls birthday date. My birthday isn’t actually until June 1 (I’ll be expecting cards then, haha, just kidding). But my mom and Paul are getting a puppy in a few weeks and won’t be able to leave home for more than a couple hours. We went out to lunch and then to the Clinique counter at the mall for my birthday present…big girl makeup. I was pampered and given some skin care and makeup tips. Now, I’m not really that into makeup and lipstick and dozens of eyeshadow colors, but it was so much fun to see what was right for my skin. It’s really nice stuff too, feels great when I’m wearing it and hopefully the cleanser and lotion will help protect my skin as I get older. Thanks mom, I had so much fun with you :)

And, random Benjamin picture…this is his new way to watch Sesame.
