Spring time!

Taking a break from sharing our Hawaii trip, there are still so many more photos to go through!
Before we left, we had the chance to go to Bristol’s open house. It’s a lawn and garden center that holds a spring event every year for families. The kids loved it, I thought it was pretty cute too. There was a bounce house, crafts, animals and of course all the cool plants and flowers to look at.
Night on the Town

My dad and Leslie took us out to one of their favorite restaurants. It definitely got points for atmosphere, I kept waiting for a mermaid to pop out of the water! I had the coconut shrimp, it was delicious!
USS Missouri

We had the chance to tour the battleship USS Missouri while in Pearl Harbor.
The top tower was being renovated/repainted so we couldn’t get into it but everything else was super impressive. The gun turrets were huge…our tour guide told us that if you had been on deck when they fired there would be nothing left of you, literally.
Our tour guide was phenomenal, I wish I remembered his name! He was like an encyclopedia!
I don’t have Snapchat but saw this and it made me giggle.
The Missouri began service towards the end of WWII and it saw several tours through the decades. It was modernized in the 80s and ended service in Desert Storm. In 1998 the battleship began its career as a museum. I love the way they left the ship, as it had served in the early 90s. This “Plan of the Day” was posted to the bulletin board in one of the hallways. Make sure to get your breakfast bright and early!
Andy checking things out. The ship was like a city at sea complete with a bakery, soda shop, doctors and dentist offices, a post office and more.
And you think YOUR cubicle is cramped!
Itty bitty living space. I can’t even imagine spending weeks and months down there.
Pearl Harbor & the USS Arizona Memorial

We had the opportunity to visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona memorial while in Oahu. The exhibits were incredibly interesting and humbling! I didn’t realize that the island of Oahu had been under martial law during the war. I learned that the entire attack was really meant to disable the southern pacific fleet so the Japanese could wreck havoc elsewhere without fear of retaliation. I also learned that several of the damaged ships were able to be raised and saw more tours.
We took a ferry out to the Arizona memorial. It was such a sobering experience, I don’t think anyone talked while we were out there.
Each of the markers is over a ship of the fleet that sunk in the attack. Oil is still coming up from the Arizona, now a tomb of the men inside.
The Bowfin was a submarine you could also tour.
The Arizona memorial faces the USS Missouri, it’s so symbolic…the beginning and end. The attack on Pearl Harbor brought us into the War and the treaty to end the war was signed on the decks of the Missouri. We also got to tour the “Mighty Mo” (more in the next post).
Botanical Gardens

We had the chance to visit these awesome botanical gardens that were free to the public. It was so neat to see such a variety of strange and wonderful plants. The gardens were so big we even got separated and lost for a little bit, but definitely had fun exploring.
