6 months

Cassidy is 6 months old! She’s a little peanut, weighing in at 12lb 6oz (3rd percentile), length at 24 1/2″ (11th percentile) and a head circumference in the 75th percentile. She’s a little girl with a big head :) Ben was 12lbs at 2 months but the doctor wasn’t concerned about her, since we’re just starting solid foods and Cassidy’s meeting all her other milestones.

She’s reaching and grabbing for everything, trying to get it all in her mouth. She just discovered her feet and has been grabbing for them too. She can sit by herself for a little bit of time before she wobbles over. And she has gotten up on her hands and knees and started to rock back and forth…ahhhh, the crawling is coming!

She absolutely loves her kitties and any time one walks by, her little face lights right up. She also giggles hysterically when you play peekaboo with her. Ben can get her to laugh too, he’ll make funny faces or sing to (at) her.

I posted about her lack of naps ;-) She takes two 40 minute naps a day, one in the morning and one in the afternoon. She’s still waking up once or twice a night to eat. I put her down at 7, she usually wakes up around 2 to eat and then sleeps again until 7.

Flashy

by Heather | 0 comments

Say hello to my little friend.
flash

I bought a speedlight flash for my camera, the Yongnuo YN500ex. I’ve wanted a camera mounted flash for a while…the little pop up flash on my camera washes everything out, but without it a lot of my inside pictures are so dark and grainy. I did a lot of research and settled on this one because:

The price was right (it was 1/3 the cost of the Canon model) and was still compatible with my camera

It could swivel and pivot, so I can direct the light in any direction

It has High Speed Sync (HSS) which means it can be used with even really high shutter speeds (up to 1/8000)

It has TTL (through the lens) metering which means it’s pretty much snap and go on my camera. Other models you had to manually adjust the flash itself because they didn’t synchronize with the camera’s settings

The size was smaller than some of the other models I was looking at, it fits well on my little camera

Can be used wirelessly as a slave flash, meaning I can have it trigger off camera. Not that I think I’ll ever really use this feature, but you never know

Can be used with cropped frame and full frame cameras. I’m perfectly happy with the not professional level, cropped frame camera I have and don’t really see myself putting down 2k for a full frame camera, but again, you never know.

So yeah, I did a ton of research (trust me I didn’t know anything about this a few weeks ago). We bought one from ebay and it arrived from China today, haha. It’s going to be a bit of a learning curve, but I’m excited to explore something new with photography. The manual is hysterical though, terribly translated English :)

40 minute napper

by Heather | 1 Comment

Little miss is not the avid napper that her brother was. Sometimes I could get 1 hour morning naps and 3 hour afternoon naps from Ben. Cassidy’s usual is 40 minutes. Which gives you just enough time to set up a project, get a few minutes into it, and have to stop and clean it up. This applies to yardwork (luckily it’s January and there is none), cleaning the house and graphic design work.

Thankfully she isn’t mobile yet. So last week when Ben was having quiet time (because he doesn’t really nap much these days, but that’s a whole ‘nother story) I brought her downstairs and set a few toys out for her. She was just as happy as could be, shaking them, smiling and drooling.

Icy windows

We haven’t updated all the windows in our house yet. While the old ones may be terribly inefficient in the winter they certainly were pretty today.

Benisms

Cassidy spit up and Ben chimed in “No no Cassidy, we don’t spit. We only spit when we brush our teeth”

We walked through the automatic doors at Target, he looked at them and said “thank you!”

Ben was laying down on the bathroom floor and I was trying to put his night time diaper on him. He was being so silly and squirmy so I told him to “sit still” and he said “But mommy I’m not sitting I’m laying.”

I told him I had to go change my pants and he asked “You peed?” as if I’d had an accident.

He received a doctor kit for Christmas. Inside was a pretend blood pressure cuff that’s blue and now he asks if he can “check your blue pressure.”

Andy made us some french toast on a Saturday morning. Great, except he put something wrong in for the vanilla. We still can’t figure out what it was, slightly lemony with a hint of spice…definitely not vanilla. The french toast was gross, so I gave some of mine to Ben (he was gobbling it up) and threw the rest out. Just as Andy walked into the kitchen, Ben blurted “No mommy, don’t throw it in the garbage!” The kid gave me up!

Ben was looking for his play phone (one of our old cell phones) and was getting frustrated because he couldn’t find it. I told him to look under his barn because I thought one was there. He pulled out a dinosaur and said “Mommy, this is Spikey, I don’t think this is a phone.”
