Start a garden!
I’m done being a chicken about it and so over being complacent and saying “oh we’ll do one next year.” Part of the inspiration came from a series our church is doing right now called “One Month to Live.” Don’t let that sound dismal, like a “we’re all gonna die” kind of thing. It’s more of a being the change you want to see in your future…if you had one month to live what would you do differently. Getting your mind into the mentality that yeah, we’re not here forever…and while we are, Christ has given us life to live to the fullest. A quote shared this past Sunday really inspired me:
Far better it is to dare mighty things, to win glorious triumphs, even though checkered by failure, than to take rank with those poor spirits who neither enjoy much nor suffer much because they live in the gray twilight that knows not victory or defeat – Theodore Roosevelt
Now doing a garden isn’t like a life altering decision here, but I’m putting this into practice and stepping out into something new. That said…we’ve found an awesome system of gardening called Square Foot Gardening. Basically instead of doing long traditional garden rows, everything is in compact raised beds. You plant 1, 4, 9 etc seeds in a square foot depending on how big the end plant will get, there is very little weeding that needs to be done, much less work (no tilling, less watering, less maintenance all around), and you can grow exactly how much your family will need instead of having WAY too much.
When I came home from “girls night” tonight, Andy surprised me with a raised bed garden box he’d built. Awe :) I didn’t know he was so on board with it! It’s 4ft x 8ft and will go behind our garage where it’ll get sun all day. He bought the seeds for plants we wanted to grow too. We’re going to try lettuce, sugar snap peas, peppers, carrots, tomatoes and cucumbers. We’re also going to start strawberries and rhubarb for next year. And cat grass (don’t laugh, they eat all my indoor plants and I’d like to give them another alternative!)
